Insect Bites and Aromatherapy
Summer is well and truly here! This time of the year when you may find yourself getting outside more, enjoying the warmer weather, having picnics and barbeques.
It’s no wonder that insect bites are almost unavoidable.
But don’t worry because there are two essential oils that are excellent at relieving irritation from insect bites.
Lavender essential oil
Lavender oil is one of the essential oils that you can use undiluted on your skin but this is best done occasionally.
Add one drop directly onto a bite for relief from an itchy insect bite and it soothes and calms the skin.
Alternatively, add 1 drop of lavender essential oil to a teaspoon of carrier oil, like Jojoba or Sweet Almond oil and apply to the affected area.
A bottle of Lavender oil will last you a very long time if you are only using a few drops at a time so it is a must for your medicine cabinet or first aid kit. Find effective Carshalton lavender oil for sale here.
Tea Tree Oil
Tea Tree is an essential oil that you can directly apply to your skin without dilution. I always advise that this should be done on occasion only.
Tea Tree is has very strong antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. Applying this to your bite will help reduce the redness and the likelihood of the bite becoming infected.
Add one drop directly onto a bite for relief from itching and to soothe and calm the skin.
If you have particularly sensitive skin you may wish to dilute it first. Add 1 drop of Tea Tree to a teaspoon of carrier oil, like Jojoba oil apply to the affected area.
Bespoke Essential Oil Blends
As a Holistic & Clinical aromatherapist I frequently make up blends for clients for specific purposes and natural insect repellents have become very popular.
I have created a very effective insect repellent blend using organic essential oils including Patchouli & Citronella.
It’s been tried and tested in New Zealand, Greece and Italy as well as of course the UK.
If you would like more information about a personalised blend please either call me on 07888 689881 or contact me here.
3 Natural Ways to Prevent Insect Bites
– wear white or pale colours – mosquitoes are attracted to dark colours
– take extra Vitamin B1 (thiamine) the excess vitamin excreted through our sweat repels bugs
– eat lots of garlic or take a supplement as the scent of this also repels bugs
I hope these three tips help you avoid insect bites this summer and if you have any questions feel free to call me on 020 8419 8143 or text 07888 689881 or send me a message.
Always consult a medical practitioner before making changes to your diet or using essential oils if you have a serious medical health condition.
