Reiki

What is Reiki and what does it mean?

Reiki, pronounced “ray-key”, originated in Japan and is made up of two Japanese words, ‘Rei’ meaning ‘Universal Life’ and ‘Ki’ pronounced “key” meaning ‘Energy’ and together they mean Universal Life Force Energy.

The Oxford English dictionary definition of Reiki is:

“A healing technique based on the principle that the therapist can channel energy into the patient by means of touch, to activate the natural healing processes of the patient’s body and restore physical and emotional well-being”.

It is also widely accepted now that Reiki can be given as a hands off treatment and via distant healing.

Where does Reiki come from?

Reiki is an original method of energy healing developed by Dr Mikao Usui (1865-1926) in Japan early in the 20th century.  He used it to treat physical, emotional and mental diseases.

It is more than a healing therapy it is a way of life.

These are the five healing Reiki principles:

  1. Just for today do not worry
  2. Just for today do not anger
  3. Just for today earn your living honestly
  4. Show gratitude to every living thing
  5. Honour your parents, teachers and elder just for today.

So what is energy?

If you have taken meditation or yoga class or have received acupuncture you will have heard of the terms ‘chi’, ‘ki’, and ‘prana’.  Each culture describes energy differently.

At school, physics taught us that matter is made up of molecules. Even something that is solid, like a chair, is vibrating all the time. We humans, are also vibrating.

When you meet someone and have a “good feeling” about them you are really talking about their vibrational energy and happy people tend to vibrate at a higher frequency.

Feeling stressed, anxious or unwell can be a reflection of your energy being out of balance or of blockages being present.

Reiki is based on the principal of maintaining the free flow of energy in a person, to sustain good health and balance.

It is a healing process that works to bring us back into balance and to reinforce the body’s natural ability to heal itself – physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually.

What can I expect from a Reiki session?

It is a non-invasive, complementary therapy which, alongside traditional medical approaches, and other complementary therapies, can address problems, by helping to restore optimal energy flow and balance.

You can choose to either lie on a couch or be seated for your session, whichever you prefer.

There is no need to remove any clothing. With your permission, I will gently place my hands on or over the body.

You may feel different sensations including warmth, tingling, cold or you may not feel anything at all. It doesn’t mean that it is not working.  You may see colours or fall into regenerating sleep.

It is quite common that afterwards you will be left with a deep sense of wellbeing.

Each session will start with a short consultation to make sure I am tailoring your treatment to your needs.
