For this blog I would like to share with you my top 5 aromatherapy holiday essentials.  Two weeks ago I arrived back from a lovely break in Crete and what a beautiful Greek island it is.  As an aromatherapy enthusiast I can’t travel without taking some essential oils with me.  I hope my experiences can help you….

1)  Keep Calm on the Journey – Ylang Ylang

I Top 5 Aromatherapy Holiday Essentailsdon’t know about you but I’ve never been a fan of flying so I always take a De-Stress Aroma Roll on with me.  One of the best essential oils for calming panic and anxiety is Ylang Ylang and it really does work!  It helps to calm your breathing and regulates a fast heart beat.

Unfortunately I needed this en route to the airport as we almost missed our flight due to an 3-car accident just ahead of us on the M23.  Thank goodness no one was seriously injured and we just made the flight.

2 & 3) Keep Mosquitoes Away! – Citronella & Patchouli

To 5 Aromatherapy Holiday EssentialsMany essential oils work as good insect repellents and research shows that Citronella and Patchouli have had some excellent results so I thought I’d put them to the test.

Recipe

I made a blend using Organic Jojoba Oil and about 3% Citronella and 2% Patchouli so overall it was a stronger dilution than usual and it did smell very strong.   The good news is that it worked.  I am usually a feast for mosquitoes and on this holiday I only got bitten twice, in odd place where I hadn’t applied the oil like the sole of one foot.

How do they work?
One of the reasons that these oils work so well together is that they not only repel the insects but they also mask our human scent which is what attracts mosquitoes in the first place!  Patchouli oil is a a fixative, which means it holds the scent of Citronella for longer.

How to use the oil?

In some ways it was a bit annoying applying oil to any exposed parts before going out to dinner in the evening but it worked and we got used to it.  Jojoba oil is light and easily absorbed and helps your body hold on too the scent more compared with a floral water spritz.

With natural insect repellents you do need to re-apply them a bit more often.  We did once in the evening and could feel the mosquitoes getting closer as it was wearing off after about 1-2 hours.

4) Skin Soothing After Sun – LavenderTop 5 Aromatherapy Holiday Essentials

Did you guess it? Lavender essential oil has excellent skin healing properties. It is the best essential oil for burns because it calms and soothes the skin and helps prevent scar formation.  Avoid getting sunburned for obvious reasons but it happens.

You can add a few drops of lavender oil to your aftersun lotion to it and then apply to the sunburned areas, it works a treat!  I took a bottle of my Restore Luxury Body Oil with me – a fantastic after sun skin repairing treatment.

5)  HolidTo 5 Aromatherapy Holiday Essentialsay First Aid – Tea Tree

My partner cut his toe on a very sharp rock when we were out walking one day.  To treat this minor cut I put a drop of Tea Tree oil on a cotton bud and used it to clean the area.  It’s anti-bacterial and antiseptic and also has skin healing properties too so it’s the perfect oil for the job.
