My top two festive oils

Can you guess which are my top two festive oils?

I’ll give you a clue… they happen to be infection beating and mood-lifting.  I think this is precisely what many of us need right now and so here’s what they are and how they work…..

Essential oils are a powerful means of naturally enhancing your mood and with Christmas not far away you might be thinking about ways you can create a warm and festive atmosphere for your guests and loved ones.

Or perhaps you feel lonely at this time of the year and need an extra pick me up.  Aromatherapy can help.

When you breathe in a scent it has a direct impact on your limbic system – the part of your brain that controls and affects your emotions.

Essential oils are therefore a perfect way to help you create a lovely atmosphere as well as positively influencing emotions.

There are many wonderful essential oils but for Dec 2021 I’d like to reveal two oils with particularly valuable properties at this time of the year.

Essential OilsClove Bud Essential Oil

I absolutely adore the scent of this oil.  It’s strong, sweetly spicy and complex all at once.  Clove oil has some AMAZING properties and comes with a some cautions too that I’ll also cover at the end.

Mood Enhancing

Salvatore Battaglia in his Complete Guide to Aromatherapy describes this oil as having a positive and stimulating effect on the mind and the ability to lift depression.  It blends wonderfully well with Sweet Orange oil, another joyful essential oil.

Like Clove Bud oil, Cinnamon oil is also good at turning around feelings of depression.  It’s positively stimulating.

Infection BeatingWoman Sneezing

During the Renaissence, pomanders were made using cloves to keep the plague epidemic at bay.

Dr Jean Valnet records that when Dutch settlers cut down all the Clove trees in Ternate, the area was swept by wave after wave of epidemics which had never happened before.

The Clove tree belongs to the botanical family of Myrtaceae (mertacy-i) which means it is a cousin to Eucalpytus and Tea-Tree and others known for their anti-infectious action.

Clove Bud oil naturally contains a high amount of eugenol making it an excellent antiseptic.

Cinnamon Bark oil is also regarded as one of the most potent antiseptic oils and it’s Cinnamon Bark oil that has a wonderful sweet and spicy festive scent.

Festive Foods

Digestion

Both Clove and Cinnamon are great oils to to stimulate digestion and helps relieves flatulence so also ideal for all the extra snacking and dinners that take place in December.

Cautions

There are different types of Clove Oil out there because the oil can be extracted from the buds, leaves and stalks.

Clove Bud Oil is the only one that should be used by aromatherapists.  The other types are well known skin irritants.

Clove Bud Oil is skin sensitizing in high concentrations so when used topically it needs to be well diluted in a carrier oil like Jojoba Oil.  Robert Tisserand recommends a maximum dilution of 0.5%.

I have used it topically in my practice many times always with very positive results and no sensitization.

Never to be consumed because it is toxic for your liver.

Clove oil that pharmacies and dentists offer for toothache is specially prepared for ingestion but instructions must be followed.

Cinnamon Bark oil is the one that smells most Christmassy, not Cinnamon Leaf oil.  Also Cinnamon Bark oil must never be used on the skin because it is a strong skin irritant.

Just enjoy its scent and benefits from using it in an oil burner or diffuser.

Cinnamon Bark & Clove Bud oil blend well with Ginger, Lemon, Orange, Ylang Ylang, Frankincense.

So all in all I think you’ll agree these two oils really pack a punch when it comes to boosting your mood, reducing anxiety, warding off coughs and colds and aiding digestion.
