Stay Cool Naturally

Wondering how to stay cool naturally this heatwave? Here are my 12 tried and tested tips – low cost, simple and they really work

12 low cost and simple strategies to help you and your family keep cool naturally as temperatures soar….

#1 Keep blinds or curtains closed during the day on the side of the house where the sun shines.

Only open windows on the sides that are shaded to let cooler air in.

If temperatures are extremely high you may be better off keeping all windows and doors shut until dusk.

#2 Eat lighter and little and often and avoid large heavy meals.

When you eat a large meal your metabolic rate increases – which increases body temperature – to allow the digestion of food.

#3 Keep a spray bottle in the fridge ready to spritz your face and body when you need it.

Always consult a qualified aromatherapist before using essential oils if you have a serious medical condition.

#9 Have a lukewarm bath or shower.  It’s tempting to have a cold shower but your body will try and heat up to compensate for the cold soon after.

Go for something that feels just below your body temperature instead.

#10 Swap your duvet for a sheet
and keep the sheet in the freezer.

#11 Avoid cooking indoors.  It’s a great time for a BBQ or switch to cold meals if that’s not an option.

#12 Include refreshing and cooling herbs and fruits like mint, watermelon and cucumber into your routine.

All the 12 tips are excellent for keeping cool in very hot weather. I like the one about keeping curtains shut to block sun on the sunny side of house during the day, and opening windows and curtains in the evening to let cool air in – something I did for my cat Louie who always hated very hot weather, even when he was young! The tip about keeping your wrist ‘pulse points’ cool is good too, another tip from cats! That is why they lie stretched out when sitting on the evening grass to keep their paws cool, so their bodies can cool down!! They don’t perspire like humans’ skins do, and can only lose heat through their paws, same for dogs.

Thanks Louisa. Love the cooling and refreshing foot bath one with peppermint, lemon or rosemary essential oil, will have to try that. Already turned the hot shower water down to cooler which is more refreshing in this hot weather…much better! Spray of floral water good, Carshalton Lavender excellent – but need to put it in the fridge to cool it! Love your regular posts! Chrisx
